My work investigates how increasing access to genetic technologies will affect people’s sense of identity. I have created a series of objects based around imaginary characters in a speculative future. The tendency with narratives based around emerging technology is to be either utopian or apocalyptic, but I have chosen to do neither. Instead, I focus on depicting an intricate web of interactions and forms in nature, drawing awareness to gaps in our knowledge and understanding of biology, recognizing that no system is perfect. By using fiber-based processes and the familiar forms of garments and textiles, I make the unfamiliar, abstract, and microscopic both visual and tactile in order to relate data to individual stories, a multiplicity of experiences, and historical context.
